    Bedwas Arts Festival

Wales and the Spanish Civil War

Bedwas Workmens Hall has been at the centre of village life since it was built by the miners’ pennies in 1923.

When the fascist dictator General Franco started his violent revolt against the democratic government in 1936, the people of Wales responded generously to appeals for Aid for Spain. Still suffering the effects of the Great Depression, they too knew what it was to go hungry, like the children of Spain, and had themselves confronted the homegrown menace of Mosley’s Fascist Brownshirts in Tonypandy that year.

Bedwas Workmens Hall was one of the centres where the Spanish Aid Committee collected food and medical aid for Spain.

On Monday, 28 October from 2-4 pm, as part of Bedwas Community Arts Festival, three historians will speak about Wales and the Spanish Civil War.

The miners from the valleys who joined the International Brigades and the nurses who gave medical support were an example of international solidarity that still inspires today.
Authors Graham Davies, Ceinwen Statter and Daryl Leeworthy will present their different perspectives on the contribution of the Welsh valleys to the Spanish Civil War.

IB Cymru’s exhibition will be on display, and a selection of the authors’ books and other material will be available.
Tickets are £3 at the door, or available online from ticketsource.co.uk/bedwas arts festival.

For more information please see Bedwas Workmen’s Hall facebook page /events / Bedwas Arts Festival.
